Approximately 4 miles from Ross Castle stands Aughnanure Castle.
The castle was built as a stronghold during the 16th century by the O’Flaherty clan. The Castle stands beside the Drimneed river which flows into Lough Corrib. The site was uniquely chosen to allow boats to bring supplies right up to the gate of the fortifcation. Standing on what is virtually a rocky island, the castle is a particularly well-preserved example of an Irish tower house. Specifically, the site contains what remains of a banqueting hall, a watch tower, an unusual double bawn and bastions and a dry harbour.
